Steady at sea · calm within

Pressure training for superyacht crew.

Calm Crew is an iPhone app for the people who keep the boats running. A check-in that takes two taps, practical training by Libby Pickett, and quick resets you can use in a cabin, on watch or between guests. Built for crew who want to enjoy the job, and the life it gives them, season after season.

Two taps to check in · 5 to 10 minute sessions · Works offline

Calm Crew’s Today screen on an iPhone, in Day mode, with sample data. Under the title “How are you now?” are five mood buttons with faces, the second, Steady, selected, and five energy buttons showing one to five dots, none chosen yet. The header shows a 5 day streak and a gear for Settings. Below are the line “Last check-in 1 day ago. View history.”, an activity counter at 2, the link “Tap to setup iCloud sync.”, a player for Day 20, The long exhale, and the Today, Learn and S.O.S. tabs.

Your record

See how your season is going.

Every check-in adds to your own record of the mood and energy you rate. Tap View history on Today to see it by day, week, month or year, with check-ins made straight after a practice on a line of their own. How many of the last seven days you checked in sits at the top of Today, and Learn shows where you are in the course. Look across the three: anything that seems to move together is a pattern, not proof of a cause.

Calm Crew’s Check-in history screen in Day mode, set to Week, with sample data for 14 to 20 September 2026. A line chart shows self-rated energy for each day on a scale of 1 to 5, in two lines: check-ins without a practice, and check-ins made straight after a practice. Without a practice, every day: Monday about 2.6, Tuesday 2.8, Wednesday 2.4, Thursday 2.9, Friday 2.5, Saturday 3.1, Sunday 2.7. Straight after a practice, on five days: Monday about 3.3, Wednesday 3.0, Thursday 3.6, Saturday 3.7, Sunday 3.2. Under the chart, Energy is selected rather than Mood, and below it the 5 day streak.

Made for life on board.

Works at sea, with or without signal.

  • No signal needed

Everything works offline. You only need internet for the optional iCloud backup.

  • Back up to iCloud

    Optional, and always your choice.

  • Day and Night

Easy on your eyes, on deck in the sun or on night watch.

  • Reminders

Only if and when you want them.

The app

Three tabs. Quick to use, easy to come back to.

Today, Learn and S.O.S. sit along the bottom of the screen. Your settings are under the gear in the corner.

  • Today

One question: “How are you now?” Tap your mood, from Storm through Rough, Choppy and Steady to Calm, and your energy from Low to High. Two taps, and it is saved. Check in as often as you like.

  • Learn

Practical training in four chapters. Each module of The Core Journey pairs a short teaching with a practice you can use the same day. The recordings are in production.

  • S.O.S.

A separate tab for the tough moments. More about it below.

The Today screen in Night mode, with sample data, a moment after a check-in: a little confetti falls around the buttons, the Steady face and the three-dot energy level are selected, and the line below reads “Last check-in 1 day ago. View history.” The header shows a 5 day streak.
Sample screen.

S.O.S.

For the tough moments.

The third tab is a quiet corner of the app. No streak, no settings, no alarm colours, nothing moving.

A few short practices to steady yourself, then routes to a person: someone on board, the bridge, and a seafarers’ helpline whose details are being confirmed before the pilot. There is a short page, too, for a crewmate helping someone else.

Calm Crew is not a crisis or emergency service. In an emergency at sea, go to the bridge. Ashore, call the local emergency number.

The practices are being recorded now.

The course

Four chapters. Practical from the first session.

Short teachings and practices by Libby Pickett, built around the real demands of yacht life: long hours, tight spaces, broken sleep and guests who expect the best.

At its centre is The Core Journey. In the pilot, it runs for eight weeks.

The Learn screen in Day mode, with sample data. Under Up next, a card for Chapter 2, Module 2, Your personal polyvagal map, 7 minutes left, with a play button. Under Your course, Chapter 1, Understand your nervous system, is marked Done. A mini player for the same module, at 3:24 of 10:00, sits above the Today, Learn and S.O.S. tabs.
Chapter 2, The Core Journey, open in Learn in Day mode, with sample data: 2 of 8 done. It lists Pre-boarding, completed; Module 1, Welcome aboard, completed; and Module 2, Meet your vagus nerve, opened. A mini player for Your personal polyvagal map, from Chapter 2, Module 2, at 3:24 of 10:00, covers the rest of the list, above the Today, Learn and S.O.S. tabs, with Learn selected.

  • Chapter 1: What pressure does to your body

How your body shifts gear under pressure, how it reads a situation before you have had time to think, and how to spot the small good moments that bring you back to steady. Two short teachings to begin with.

  • Chapter 2: The Core Journey

Pre-boarding, then seven modules, each a teaching with its practice: Welcome aboard Your body’s built-in brake Breath control on shift Sleep in a world that never stops Calm under pressure Quick resets for small spaces Your long game

  • Chapter 3: The Leadership Track

For heads of department and captains: leading a crew through a long season, and staying sharp yourself. Six lessons, each a teaching and a practice. How it opens is still being decided.

  • Chapter 4: Toolkit

Short practices in ten families, from breath and focus to rest, ready whenever you need one. Opens when you finish The Core Journey.

Privacy

Yours, and nobody else’s.

Your captain never sees your answers.

Anonymous. Now, and later. By design.

  • Anonymous

Your name and anything that identifies you are never shared.

  • Your data. Your iCloud.

    You own your data. Always.

  • What management sees.

A combined picture of how the whole crew is doing on energy and mood, never anyone’s own answers. The more of the crew who use the app, the clearer that picture becomes. Your check-ins only count towards it if you say yes when the app asks.

The pilot

A study, not a claim.

For the pilot, the app is iPhone only.

Who the Calm Crew app is for

  • Crew

For the deckhand, stew, engineer or chief who wants to be good at this for a long time, and to enjoy it. Join the waiting list and you’ll hear first.

  • Captains and heads of department

You carry the vessel’s load and your own, and the whole crew reads you for the weather. The Leadership Track is being built for you, and how it opens is still being decided. Join the waiting list to hear first.

  • Vessels, fleets and management

Give your crew a practical tool for the pressure of the job, and see an anonymised picture of energy and mood across the boat. We are looking for a handful of vessels to join the November pilot: founding partners get named founding status, the programme at no cost for their participating crew, and a first look at the study’s overall findings. No vessel or company sees any crew member’s own answers.

About Libby

Why this, and why me.

Calm Crew comes out of seven years of one-to-one practice, group work and retreats, with yacht crew and industry people among them.

Libby Pickett on a terrace by the sea, smiling, leaning on the back of a chair.

I’m Libby Pickett. I train people to handle pressure using the body’s own systems for staying steady, and I live on the island of Mallorca.

What I kept hearing was not people asking for help. It was people asking how to keep going at this standard — how to still be sharp in month seven, and still be themselves at the end of a season. The answer, again and again, is capacity: the room you have inside to take the pressure in your stride. Calm Crew is how I help crew build theirs.
